Back pain is a leading cause for physician visits, with approximately 60-80% of the US population experiencing episodes of acute low back pain at least once in their lives. While the majority of these patients improve with conservative care, a significant number become chronically debilitated and require surgical intervention. Historically, these patients have been treated with spinal fusion. Now, the introduction of total disc replacement provides a motion-preserving alternative to spinal fusion for these patients.

Motion preservation of the spine is recognized as a breakthrough in the field of orthopedics, and is expected to make a significant impact on the surgical treatment of degenerative disc disease (DDD) in the United States, as knee and hip replacements did over the last few decades.

In early 1990, the first Patient was implanted with the ProDisc Total Disc Replacement in the lumbar spine.

The recent FDA approval of ProDisc-L Total Disc Replacement provides US spine surgeons a clinically proven alternative to fusion surgery.
